Rumor: SSB Ultimate’s Single Player Mode Called Spirits Mode

Last week’s Nintendo Direct presentation at EVO 2018 gave us a whole slew of new info, including several new fighters. It also teased a mysterious mode on the main menu, but a fan might have already figured out what it is.

The Nintendo Direct last week gave us a good deal of new characters, including King K. Rool from Donkey Kong, Simon Belmont and Richter from Castlevania, Chrom from Fire Emblem, and Dark Samus from Metroid. We also got to see the main menu, which had a single mode pixelated out. Shortly after the Nintendo Direct ended, however, a Twitter user known as “l’attardé” (@noctulescent) did some detective work and pieced together the pixelated part of the main menu. This part of the main menu is something game director Masahiro Sakurai said he “can’t talk about … just yet.” However, after careful examination, the pixelated part of the main menu appears to read “Spirits.”

With this potential bit of info now out, fans are discussing just what this mode could possibly entail. Given the mode’s name, it could have to do with some of the deaths shown in previous trailers. Ridley’s introduction had him more or less murder Mario and Mega Man, and the previous Nintendo Direct showed fans the shocking sight of Castlevania’s version of Death literally tearing Luigi’s soul from his body with a scythe. Fans are speculating if these deaths and the character’s spirits could be involved in a single-player mode, whether it be a basic Adventure Mode like in Melee or a slightly more story driven mode, like Brawl’s Subspace Emissary.

Last’s weeks Nintendo Direct also hinted that we might be seeing Castlevania’s Dracula in the game. Sakurai said that we’ll be learning much more, including the game’s full roster, prior to the game’s release on the Nintendo Switch December 7. We’ll be sure to know whether this speculation is right or not sometime soon.
