Indie roguelite first-person shooter VOID/BREAKER received an announcement trailer from its publisher Playstack and developer Stubby Games. Gematsu shares that VOID/BREAKER has also been announced to release as a part of Steam’s Early Access program sometime this year, 2025, followed by a full release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
VOID/BREAKER takes place in a corrupt simulation. Players will assume the role of a prisoner captured by IDRIS, a malevolent AI being whose intent is to keep you trapped within a testing algorithm. Your purpose is to uncover more about the simulation, discovering IDRIS’s origin and finding a way to escape.
The Triple-i Initiative showcased an inside look with sole developer on VOID/BREAKER, Daniel Stubbington. Stubbington shared some insight on VOID/BREAKER’s art direction ”I looked toward the pitfalls of current AI technology, the way artificial intelligence generates images that feel uncanny and almost unnatural that philosophy has been a key part of VOID/BREAKER’S visual identity creating a world that feels like it’s generated by a rogue AI that’s desperately trying to mimic reality but leaving behind those little imperfections. A horizon of uncanny liminal spaces ready to be explored and lurking within the unsettling creations of IDRIS relentless eerie beings with only one directive, to break you down.”
Players will run through gun fights, aiming to outmaneuver enemies. VOID/BREAKER features a gun-modding system and loadouts. Destructible environments are a feature and a tactical advantage, including destructible walls and structures used to stagger opponents. The game is produced by a solo developer, the creator of The Entropy Centre.
VOID/BREAKER is an ambitious second outing from what appears to be a passionate solo developer. While borrowing ideas from modern ai technology for its narrative and setting this title may hopefully set itself apart later on this year and once it finally reaches consoles.
