Harmonix’s Rock Band is quickly approaching its 10 year anniversary next month, which the developer is celebrating by creating a series-spanning time capsule based on community submissions.
The project, Rock Band Diaries, was announced today on Twitter and detailed on Harmonix’s blog ahead of the series’ Nov. 20 birthday. Harmonix is asking the community for their memorable photos, videos and stories the game has given them, whether they are Rock Band veterans or newcomers.
Over the series’ decade-long run, Harmonix developed four numbered entries, two band-specific titles (The Beatles: Rock Band and Green Day: Rock Band) and seven spin-offs (Lego Rock Band, Rock Band Unplugged, Mobile, Reloaded, Blitz, VR and Rock Band for iOS devices) that propelled the series into a pop culture icon. While the series did not start the rockstar-emulating craze of the 2000s (credit to Guitar Hero, which Harmonix developed the first two games) the music franchise became prominent enough to cameo in South Park and The Office.
Knowing how unique some of the community’s stories are, Harmonix will sift through submissions over the coming months and share the results once the digital diary is full. The following are examples that Harmonix Social & Community Lead Josh Harrison wrote for the developer’s post about the diary.
Remember when you met your now-significant other at a Rock Band party, and now you’re happily married with two kids and a dog that chewed up your guitar headstock? We want to hear about it. How about Rock Band teaching you the basics of drumming, which encouraged you to buy a full kit, which in turn led you to be the kickass drummer for a real band? We want to hear about that, too. What about that time you broke a lamp in the hotel that you brought Rock Band because you didn’t want to be without it over PAX weekend, and you told the front desk it was broken when you checked in? Yeah, that’s up our alley too.
