The popular third-person shooter, Risk of Rain 2, released for Early Access in March of 2019 and fully released in 2020 which means this upcoming March marks its second year being out. Risk of Rain 2 has been immensely successful, selling over four million copies on Steam with ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ reviews. So, this year marks the first premium update that is coming to the game as well as a free anniversary update to “flesh out and round out” the core gameplay.

The free anniversary update includes a variety of additions that did not make it into the original version of the game. This includes the previously scrapped Bandit which is a new type of survivor that modders ended up adding into the game. Hopoo Games have confirmed that the update will not affect the modders’ version. There will be some smaller additions as well such as a bunch of new lore entries, items, quality of life improvements, and more.
However, those looking for even more content might be excited to know that there is a paid expansion coming later this year. This will include a lot of new items, survivors, bosses, enemies, events, and more. This expansion is expected to be the size of about 2-3 content updates, and more information will hopefully be released in the coming months.
The anniversary update is expected to come out in a couple of days on March 25 on PC before making its way to other platforms, whereas the first expansion is expected to come out sometime in quarter 4 of 2021. Risk of Rain 2 is available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia for $24.99.
