In their most recent announcement, Riot Games has said that they will be hosting 48 hour League of Legends Tournament with the goal of raising money for COVID-19 relief. Under the name “Mid-Season Streamarathonz”, the tournament is set to take play starting on May 29th at 8 PM ET. It will also feature competitive matches (along with exhibition matches and “much much more”) with streamers from all corners of the globe.
The broadcast is said to feature over a nonstop stream taking place over the course of 48+ hours. They also highlight continental battles with all teams based in Europe and a battle between popular (Brizillian based) influencers Yoda and Kami. Viewers will also be able to watch the semifinals and finals for the Mid-Season Cup. As this is the first time that Riot Games has held an event to raise money, they are certainly not the only ones who are doing what they can to help.
During this broadcast, fans will also be able to donate any amount of money to COVID relief efforts that are “distributed by the Riot Games Social Impact Fund to organizations around the world such as the ImpactAssets COVID Response Fund and the GlobalGiving Coronavirus Relief Fund.” The stream will be shown through watch.lolesports.com and have a variety of subtitles and translations that will air. At the same time as announcing this stream, League of Legends also announced that the Championship Series is moving to Friday nights, along with the removal of the Monday Night League broadcast. “We’re disappointed that Monday Night League didn’t work out as well as we hoped, but we’re excited for the shift to Friday, and being able to incorporate a lot of the lessons from Monday Night League into our broadcast this summer,” LCS commissioner reportedly told The Verge.
