One of the ongoing trends in the tech industry these days is the push for AI and how it is affecting a variety of differents sectors. One of the big issues in the video game industry with AI is how AI data centers are buying up huge quantities of RAM which has led to an increase of RAM prices which has attributed to the increase of video game consoles and accessories. The big three, PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox, have each made significant adjustments to both. Now, it seems that the issue is causing change in plans for the launch of new hardware. Bloomberg reports that experts familiar with Sony’s strategies say that the launch of the PlayStation 6 could be pushed back to 2028 or even 2029.
Sony has confirmed that they have enough memory to meet demand for PS5 consoles throughout 2026. They are planning to negotiate with various suppliers to secure for the future. “As for securing a supply of memory, we are already in a position to secure the minimum quantity necessary to manage the year-end selling season of next fiscal year–October to December 2026,” Sony CFO Lin Tao said.
Tao added that the “hardware sales strategy can be adjusted flexibly.” Many believe that Tao is suggesting that the PS5 generation will be around for some time yet.
Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing talked about how the RAM shortage is not going to be solved any time soon. “This structural imbalance between supply and demand is not simply a short-term fluctuation.”
At a conference earlier this month in Sout Korea, Tim Archer, CEO of chip equipment supplier Lam Research Corp, said, “We stand at the cusp of something that is bigger than anything we’ve faced before. What is ahead of us between now and the end of this decade, in terms of demand, is bigger than anything we’ve seen in the past, and, in fact, will overwhelm all other sources of demand.”
