Report: Embracer Groups Plans on Acquiring Even More Studios Within The Year

Embracer Group, which is the parent company of THQ Nordic, isn’t looking to slow down their conquest for video game world domination. The company has acquired roughly 62 studios since the beginning of 2020, which is valued at an estimated $8.1 billion. Speaking with the Financial Times, and reported by Video Game Chronicles, CEO Lars Wingefors stated that they plan on making a similar amount in the coming months, if not by the end of the year. This would bring the overall value of Embracer Group to unprecedented heights.

Wingefors also mentioned that he wants to invest in more free-to-play titles as well as other countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Poland, France, and China. When making these purchases, Wingfors mentioned that they don’t just buy any random studio. Instead, they look into “entrepreneurs with a successful record” and once acquired they take a full hands-off approach with them, giving them full freedom to act as they see fit. Wingefors also mentioned that having more studios under their umbrella takes the risk factor down by a wide margin. “If you can make one game, you have a big business risk but if you make 200 games, like we do, the business risk is less.”

Keep in mind that Embracer Group themselves stated that they were going to try and acquire around the same amount of studios they obtained in 2021 for 2022. However, this new report shines much brighter light, as it looks like they’ll be going above and beyond that original statistic.  The company as a whole is already valued at a staggering $9.9 billion with around 115 studios under their umbrella. They made some serious waves early last year when they purchased Gearbox, the developer of the Borderlands franchise, and again at the end of 2021 when they acquired Dark Horse comics. With an already insanely impressive library at their beckoning, it’ll be interesting to see what Embracer Group does from here, or which studio will be the next one to join their ranks.
