Report: Call of Duty 2021 to be Set During WWII and be Developed by Sledgehammer Games

It’s that time of year again when speculation and rumors start going around about this year’s upcoming Call of Duty title. There was an initial report from the site Modern Warzone stating that the new iteration is going to once again return to the franchise roots and take place during World War II, as well as being developed by Sledgehammer Games. Eurogamer has revealed that their own source has confirmed this to be true, with some additional information. The storyline will also have ties to the Battle Royale mode Warzone, similar to the more recent entry, Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. Lastly, the newest title would be named Call of Duty: WWII Vanguard.

Earlier reports and rumors stated that the game’s setting would have it take place in an alternate timeline where World War II did not end and continued into the 1950s. Eurogamer’s source claims that this is not the case and that the game will have the “traditional World War II setting.” As always, Activision has yet to officially comment or make any statement in regards to this, but they usually give us a teaser or two leading up to the actual reveal, which normally happens from May-June. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, last year was a bit different as Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War wasn’t officially unveiled until August.

The developer, Sledgehammer Games, is one of Activision’s proprietary studios for the Call of Duty franchise and was also the main developer for 2017’s Call of Duty WWII. Before that, the last title in the series to be set during the global conflict was 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War, which was developed by Treyarch. All signs point to the next entry taking place in World War II, but only Activision and their developers know what the next step is going to be. Either way, the Call of Duty franchise is more than likely poised to have another excellent year, and we’ll more than likely find out sooner than later what they’ve got in store for us.
