There has been a new Call of Duty game every year since 2004. However, according to Bloomberg, that will change next year as the next, new Call of Duty slated for 2023 has been delayed to 2024. Sources familiar with the situation, executives in charge of the franchise have made the decision early after “a recent entry in the series failed to meet expectations.” This led them to believe that the current annual cadence of releases was too rapid.
The recent entry that failed to meet expectations was Call of Duty: Vanguard. The company mentioned that last year’s Call of Duty title failed to meet Activision’s fourth-quarter projections in a recent SEC filing.
This year’s Call of Duty offering will be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare. The game will get “a steady stream of additional content.” That’ll come this year and next year along with a new free-to-play online game that will be released in 2023 and Call of Duty: Warzone 2. Activision said that the Modern Warfare sequel and the new Warzone experience will be “designed together from the ground-up.”
Following the report, Activision released a statement. “We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year and beyond,” an Activision spokesperson said. “Reports of anything otherwise are incorrect. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.”
