Remasters of the First Three Original Tomb Raider Games are Coming to Steam

Remastered versions of Tomb Raiders I, II, and III have been confirmed by Realtech VR, the company handling all of the remasters. The games will be free, on Steam, for owners of the originals—and you’ll need to own the originals to play the remasters, as they’ll operate much like mods. Realtech VR also added that all three games’ PC versions would feature a new 3D engine and support OpenVR.

The Tomb Raider remasters are based off of mobile versions of the games, according to Realtech. The first two games’ remasters have already been completed, and Tomb Raider III is currently a work in progress. A trailer for the third game has been promised, to arrive next month, and you can watch trailers for the first two below:

Besides a new video for Tomb Raider III in April, Realtech VR does not have a release date for its remasters yet. Currently the mods have only been planned for release on Steam, though Realtech has been looking into GOG.com as well. Distribution beyond Steam is still in question due to some legalities, which Realtech addressed. “We want to be clear: The mod is not endorsed by Square Enix and we not working with them,” Realtech tweeted in response to fan feedback. “The TR mod is right now a working idea that realtech VR needs to green lit which is not the case yet.”

Regardless of difficulties from other game distribution platforms, the Tomb Raider remasters for Steam are proceeding as planned.

Glenn Carreau: Hi! I'm Glenn: recent college grad specializing in interactive arts and media, writer, game creator and connoisseur, pop culture junkie, and semi-professional fan-artist and blogger. In my free time, I function as an unnecessarily specific gaming encyclopedia. I also play the violin, binge crime/detective procedural shows (still not sure why), and do a large amount of digital painting. I'm probably too attached to Dragon Age, but not really inclined to do anything about it. I'm a huge fan of cosplay, foxes, the prose of Jenny Lawson, and Strong Female Characters™.
