Red Dead Redemption Receives PS4 and Nintendo Switch Port, No Remaster

Red Dead Redemption is finally coming to the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch, on August 17th, Rockstar announced today. There’s been increasing rumors in recent months of a Red Dead Redemption remaster, however today’s announcement isn’t the remaster longtime fans were hoping for. Red Dead Redemption is merely getting a port to the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The port also includes the acclaimed Undead Nightmare DLC.

Red Dead Redemption will release digitally August 17th, with physical copies out on October 13th. The game will go for $49.99, with no native PS5 version, as the PS4 version will work through backward compatibility. Xbox users can still play the game thanks to Xbox 360 titles still playable through on the current gen console. Unfortunately, as well, there’s still no word on if it’ll ever come to PC.

With today’s announcement came a short trailer video from Rockstar of Red Dead Redemption presumably running on the PS4 and Switch. The graphics are nearly identical to the original game’s release in 2010. In essence, this is a $49.99 ported game from 2010. Rockstar does note that there’s newly supported languages, though that’s all they provide in regards to any— if at all— graphical or fidelity improvement to the port that are included.

The port is developed by Double Eleven Studios,  which is known for its development on Fallout 76, Rust Console Edition, and Minecraft Dungeons. While fans were largely hoping for remaster of Red Dead Redemption, akin to the incredible graphical fidelity seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s been rumored a remaster was scrapped in part due to the absolute mess the GTA Trilogy released in. Red Dead Redemption 2 also has faced its share of fan furor, released in 2018, the game has yet to see any next-gen upgrades, there’s still no 60fps, and Red Dead Online is pretty much dead.
