Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 are a Star Wars game duology that many consider to be the pinnacle of the entire franchise, let alone Star Wars games. Every Star Wars game since has been chasing the dragon of these two classic CRPGs by Bioware and Obsidian respectively, so when news that the Knights of the Old Republic remake was put on ice, it was met with some grieving. But it seems that stories of the Knights of the Old Republic remake’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, and what could bring about news of its life other than legal action from Disney.
As Gamefile reports, news of these remakes coming back come by way of an order from Disney’s ever-vigilant legal team stopping Aspyr from adding the cut content back to Knights of the Old Republic II’s Switch version. KOTOR II is a game that has many fans but was rushed out of the door by Obsidian due to time constraints, and so Aspyr decided that, for the first time, an official release would feature all of the things Obsidian were forced to leave on the cutting room floor. But a surprise letter from Disney stopped them.
Only recently have the full details of the legal process behind the removal of KOTOR II’s DLC for the cut content been made public. The court proceedings have revealed that not only is the Knights of the Old Republic remake still on the table, led by Saber Interactive, Knights of the Old Republic II is due for a full remake as well, though we don’t know just how far along the development of these remakes is.
It really sucks that Aspyr were prevented from restoring the cut content back to the KOTOR II Switch port, a game that really needs that extra bit of love and time to truly tell its story, but a full remake of the game could possible give KOTOR II that extra shine it always needed to be a truly great game. Of course, there’s always the apprehension around remakes and remake culture in the contemporary gaming industry, but for now, know that Knights of the Old Republic may be making a comeback in a big way.
