French game studio, Quantic Dream, is known widely for their relationship with Sony, developing exclusive titles for PlayStation systems. With recent releases like Detroit: Become Human, Beyond 2 Souls, and Heavy Rain popping up on PC, the studio appeared to begin separating itself from Sony. This isn’t an accident, as Quantic Dream has released an article on their website looking back on their 23-year history, and announcing their plans to become entirely independent and self-publish all their future game titles.
CEO of Quantic Dream, David Cage, has expressed frustration with marketing differences between the game studio and its past publishers. With multiple commercial and critical successes under its belt, Quantic Dream is now in a position to fund it’s own games, and expressed their desire to publish games from other studios. The statement reads: “This new venture will allow us to make decisions in total independence, and to address the technological and strategic opportunities of next-generation platforms. It will also allow us to help other developers, by providing investment and development support…”
The new direction could mean big things for future Quantic Dream’s future projects, with the possibility of publishing their first Xbox game since the original Xbox. It is likely that none of their future releases will be exclusive to any one system. The statement notes their desire to take advantage of all “technological and strategic opportunities” afforded by next generation consoles. Famous for their cinematic and narrative driven games, the studio has a lot more at their disposal to continue creating and evolving their gameplay and style. What this will manifest remains to be seen.
Quantic Dream celebrates its 23rd birthday this year, since being founded by David Cage and Guillaume de Fondaumière in 1997. Things have only gotten better for them, with the company selling a minority stake to NetEase last year. They close out their article saying this: “Thanks to you, we will continue to be who we are: different, curious, passionate and sincere, and we will do all we can to keep amazing and moving you.”
