After the cancellation of E3 2020, many were wondering how and when publishers and developers are going to reveal what they had for the event. Nowadays, everything is online and everybody in the video game industry takes that opportunity to share what is getting developed. Some companies like PlayStation and Nintendo take things a step further with a curated video that shares what they want to share. Nintendo Directs, while mostly brief depending on the game have been successful for the company. With that in mind, some of the major publishers that were going to attend the event revealed what’s next as they try and figure out the best way to share what they had in store for E3 2020. Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox took to Twitter to announce that Xbox will be doing a digital event:
Nintendo said: “Nintendo supports the ESA’s decision to cancel this year’s E3 to help protect the health and safety of everyone in our industry – our fans, our employees, our exhibitors, and our longtime E3 partners. We would like to express our concern and support for all those affected by the COVID -19 outbreak during this challenging time. We’ll continue to be flexible and redirect our efforts to other ways of keeping our fans up to date about our activities and products. Because of the COVID -19 outbreak, large industry events may be untenable for the foreseeable future. But we are considering various ways to engage with our fans and will have more to share as the year continues.”
EA used to be a part of E3 proper before breaking off from the convention center to do their own thing during the week of E3 called EA PLAY. Following the cancellation of E3 2020, the company said: “We’ve continued to follow the coronavirus developments around the world very closely. Clearly the situation is evolving by the day, and we’ve been reviewing how it will change our plans for EA PLAY 2020. We will share more soon.”
Devolver Digital, who somewhat broke the news of the cancellation of this year’s E3 said: “The week of E3 has always been a big part of what we do and are genuinely bummed about the cancellation of the event itself. Lots to juggle but right now we plan on having a livestream Devolver Direct/ press conference and possibly more.” Ubisoft also took to Twitter to share their plans for a digital experience.
PlayStation already announced that they were not going to be at E3 2020 but no word has been given about their plans. Everyone is still waiting for the official reveal of the PlayStation 5.
