Since PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds broke the record for the most concurrent users, a few other studios have tried to imitate the same formula and play style in order to achieve the same results. Fortnite, the Battle Royale style title from Epic Games was one attempt, but now Oneiric Entertainment’s creative director Sean Pinnick has came out and stated via Reddit post that they have a small team working on a VR Battle Royale game called Virtual Battlegrounds.
The game is currently in early development and is looks a bit unpolished as you can tell from the trailer below, but the developer promises a lot more to come. According to Pinnock the project has been very community driven from the very beginning and that the idea itself came from a previous post from the studio on Reddit. Pinnick has even been gathering direction from the comment sections from the announcement post on the project.
Because of the small player base of VR headsets, the development team is limiting the games to 16 players currently. There will be free for all matches as well as team matches too. However, there are plans to increase this number if there is a popular demand for the game. The developer Oneiric Entertainment says that the game will be in development and will be released on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. However it isn’t sure if the game will be available for early access. The studio is now currently holding signups for players interested in the Early Alpha.
