Given the popularity of the most widespread MMOs, newer entries in the genre are few and far between. As a result, innovations on the classic formula have been similarly rare. With the release of its first gameplay trailer, Project DNA has promised its own take on the genre with a unique premise and mechanics. Developed by Supervoid, the new game takes the appeal of an RPG and combines it with the idea that genetic modification can allow for rapid evolution across generations.
The trailer begins by introducing viewers to the process of DNA cloning, with people being birthed while attached to machines and wrapped in clear containers. Project DNA takes place in a post-apocalyptic future with a weakened human population. As the clone seemingly wakes up, she experiences flashes of violence and monsters raging across the ruined world. The description of the video grants a few more insights into the state of the world, including humanities plan to use advanced genetic algorithms to evolve across generations and become strong enough to take on the threats before them.
Following the small glimpse into Project DNA’s story, a series of gameplay clips play. Multiple characters are seen running through a massive industrial area and desert region. The main character the camera follows is shown using both a flaming sword and fiery projectiles. Later on, the camera focuses on a character with lightning abilities using similar abilities. The trailer shows off battles of increasing scale, exemplifying the strengths of an MMO. The final battle is a solo fight against a larger monster with telegraphed attacks. The very last shot is of a person with cybernetic pieces gazing menacingly forward.
MMOs have been largely unexplored compared to older video game genres. Project DNA seems to offer a fresh perspective on the mechanics, tying it into the larger narrative surrounding the game. It is planned to release soon on Steam.
