PopCap announces Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

When PopCap released Plants vs. Zombies back in 2009, I would’ve never thought this addictively simple tower-defense game would experiment with completely different genres.  That’s what we got with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and the series is doing it again with Plant vs. Zombies Heroes The Lawn of a New Battle.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes seems to combine elements of a competitive trading card game like Hearthstone with the tower defense gameplay of the original Plants vs. Zombies.  From the gameplay videos shown, it looks like players will have five lanes to set up teammates to attack and defend.

Each of the plant and zombie heroes have unique abilities to give the player an edge in battle.  The Pea-Shooter hero The Green Shadow can shoot down the entire middle lane, leaving the opponent open for damage.  Solar Flare’s ability gives the player extra sun throughout the game, which gives us a hint at how the game’s mechanics will work.  Some playable characters are returning from Garden Warfare, including Super Brainz with the ability to move one of his teammates to a different lane.

Other features included in the game are real-time PvP and crafting, meaning this game will have plenty of content to keep players satisfied.  Plants vs Zombies Heroes looks like a fast-paced competitive version of the original game, with some collectable cards thrown into it.  It’s good to see that such a popular and fun franchise is willing to take a risk and make something with completely different gameplay, while maintaining a little bit of the tower defense elements that made people fall for this series.  We can expect Plants Vs. Zombies Heroes to come to mobile devices sometime in 2016.
