Live-service games, or games as a service, are online games that are updated over time with content and are usually free to play, supported by digital goods. A trend in gaming that many disliked, as it invited laziness in development and no real growth, and there was always a lingering fear that the game’s end-of-service would take all your money spent on it. Especially in recent times, many games have EOS, and either refunding or taking everything is a trend many dislike. Pokémon Unite is officially ending its service on March 23, 2027, and the reason is unknown, but if it follows recent live-service shutdown trends, it’s due to money.
We would like to share an important message regarding #PokemonUNITE.

Pokémon Unite is a free-to-play live-service multiplayer game by TiMi Studio Group, released 5 years ago. In the game, you play as different Pokémon from the series and battle other teams in a MOBA-style mode. The game is a live-service title, so it receives updates over time, with microtransactions keeping it afloat. That all is coming to an end in March of 2027, as the game will end service on March 23. The reasoning is unknown as of now, with many speculating it’s due to greed. Even though the game is ending, there will be an update and a special event leading up to its imminent shutdown, so you can experience its grand finale. All in-game purchases will be suspended, and players will not receive refunds. After EOS, the game will include a library feature that allows players to view their records and in-game content.
“We offer our sincerest gratitude to the many Trainers who have played since service started for the Nintendo Switch version on July 21, 2021. We would like to express our thanks to everyone by holding a special event until service ends. The Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo competitive tournament (an event for Pokémon UNITE only) will also be held as previously announced. We hope you continue to enjoy Pokémon UNITE until the final day of service. After service ends, the “Pokémon UNITE Game Content Guidelines for Online Platforms” will no longer be published or maintained, and we will no longer provide support regarding use of Pokémon UNITE video and images.”
Pokémon UNITE EOS sucks, as many players who spent money on the game will lose it since the game will be unplayable. The curse of games as-a-service, and the fact that this comes out of nowhere, is not a good look. The reasoning behind the shutdown is currently unknown; as mentioned before, many speculate it’s due to greed, but only time will tell. Pokémon UNITE is officially set to end service on March 23, 2027, for both mobile and Nintendo Switch.
