Pokémon Direct Reveals Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and New Expansion Pass for Pokémon Sword and Shield

The new Pokémon Direct today revealed two new things coming to the Pokémon gaming world this year: a new Mystery Dungeon title and a Sword and Shield expansion pass. The new Mystery Dungeon game is called Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and is a remake of the original Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team that originally released for the Nintendo DS and GameBoy Advance, respectively. Rescue Team DX will be coming out on March 6, 2020 for the Nintendo Switch. Before that, a free demo will be available on the eShop at some point “later today,” and you can carry over the save data from the demo to the new game.

The bulk of the Direct focused on a new expansion pass for Sword and Shield, which will be released in two parts: the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. The first part will release in June with the second releasing sometime in the fall. Each part features a new open area similar to the Wild Area to explore, with new characters and Pokémon to interact with, along with more trainer customization options, such as fashion and hairstyle. The new characters and Pokémon will differ somewhat between both versions.

The Isle of Armor will have a main theme of growth. You will adventure to an island with a dojo to train at, under the guidance of a mentor named Mustard, who was once the Galar Champion himself. There will also be a new rival character to train opposite of at the dojo: Poison-Type user Klara in Sword and Psychic-Type user Avery in Shield. After completing your training, Mustard will bestow the new Legendary Pokémon, Kubfu, upon you. Kubfu is a Fighting-Type and evolves into Urshifu, who has two different “styles”: Single Strike, which makes it Fighting and Dark-Type, and Rapid-Strike, which makes it Fighting and Water-Type. Each style has its own Gigantamax form. Unlike many Legendaries, Urshifu can be used in both online and official battle competitions.

The Crown Tundra will have a main theme of exploration. The new area is a snowy terrain with a strange temple, which is suggested to hold the Regi-Trio from Gen III, and a “mysterious, giant tree.” In your explorations, you will encounter the new Legendary Calyrex, who is Psychic and Grass-Type. There will be new Pokémon Dens to explore in both single player and co-op mode, which will hold Dynamaxed versions of Legendary Pokémon from previous games, along with some brand new Legendaries who bear resemblance to the Legendary Bird Trio from Gen I and the Regi Trio.

There will be new Gigantamax forms for the three Galar starters, Inteleon, Rillaboom, and Cinderace, as well as Gigantamax forms of Venusaur and Blastoise, which implies that the Bulbasaur and Squirtle lines will be added to the games. Over 200 old Pokémon who weren’t previously available in Sword and Shield will appear in the new areas from the expansion pass. Players who don’t purchase the expansion pass will be able to update their games for free, which will allow them to add these new old Pokémon via trading or transferring from Pokémon Home, which will be available in February 2020 after being announced last May.

Some of the old Pokémon teased to be returning with the expansion pass include Volcarona, Kingdra, Dedenne, and Lycanroc in the Isle of Armor, and Aurorus, Nidorino, Sealeo, and Garchomp in the Crown Tundra.

Starting today, the Gigantamax Pokémon most likely to appear will change. Gigantamax Coalossal will appear more often in Sword while Gigantamax Lapras will appear more often in Shield, and Gigantamax Flapple and Appletun will appear more often in both.

A new software update will be available for the game today that adds in Galarian Slowpoke. Galarian Slowpoke can be evolved into Galarian Slowbro or Galarian Slowking with different items found in the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. Galarian Slowpoke can be found in Wedgehurst station after talking to Klara (in Sword) or Avery (in Shield).

The expansion pass can be pre-purchased from the eShop for $29.99 starting later today. Pre-purchasing it will give players new Pikachu and Eevee-themed jerseys for trainer customization.
