As we inch ever closer to the month of June, it’s that time again when rumors and speculation take center stage right before the next big video game industry livestream/show/presentation. We know that the month kicks off with another Summer Game Fest showcase and the Xbox Games Showcase but we don’t know what PlayStation is doing. Now, we might have an idea. There were reports regarding PlayStation’s plans for its next big presentation and whether or not it would be a PlayStation Showcase or State of Play. Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb is reporting that the next PlayStation event will be a State of Play and that it will happen next month in June.
Back in February, Grubb reported that according to his sources, Sony hadn’t decided whether or not they would have a PS5 Showcase this Summer or another State of Play. During the latest episode of Game Mess Mornings, Grubb talked about ‘reliable’ insiders saying that there wouldn’t be a May event this year.
“I haven’t either,” Grubb said, “and that’s because something’s happening in June, it’s a June thing. Now, is that going to be a big Showcase? I don’t think so.” “I said a couple of months ago that I heard that they were discussing going back and forth about doing a Showcase or a State of Play, sounds like they probably settled on a State of Play,” he said. “I’m not 100% about that aspect of it – it’s probably a State of Play, though – but I have heard June.”
Grubb said that his sources weren’t willing to discuss when the next big PlayStation presentation will be compared to previous conversations. This led Grubb to speculate whether or not a big announcement is coming with the next presentation.
“They are being very guarded,” he said. “Just getting the details that there’s something happening in June was kind of difficult to come by, so it does make me feel like they are hiding some stuff, although that is pure speculation.”
That is not based on anything other than it was abnormally difficult to squeeze the information out,” Grubb explained. “And the fact that no one else is really hearing about it yet makes me think’s like they are really locking things down. So maybe they do have something cooking, or maybe this is just a new initiative from PlayStation that has nothing to do with the content.”
Nothing official from PlayStation has been said yet, but keep a lookout for an announcement soon if these reports are true.
