Following the unintentional confirmation that the game will be released this year, everyone was eagerly anticipating the first official look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Today, during the PlayStation Showcase, we got just that with two trailers. One introduced Kraven the Hunter, who many speculated was the narrator of the game’s official announcement back in 2021. The other trailer was the official gameplay reveal as we saw both Peter and Miles duke it out against Kraven’s forces as they hunt Dr. Curt Connors, aka The Lizard.
Kraven’s on the hunt for an equal and his search brings him to New York with the Spider-Men and the rogue’s gallery of villains that they contend with on a daily basis. Alongside Kraven are his Hunters, a new enemy faction.
The gameplay starts off in Queens, one of the new playable and explorable boroughs that is being introduced in the sequel. Peter Parker bursts through basement doors equipped with the highly coveted, iconic, and beloved Black Suit as he tears through the Hunters with a newfound aggressiveness that we have not seen from this version of the character.
With the new suit comes new combat abilities such as aggressive parries that gives Peter the upper hand and a web to shunt enemies away. With the new parry mechanic, certain attacks can’t simply be dodged and will need to be parried in order to properly evade them. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac wants to put respect on the Black Suir and give it the story t deserves. ” In this installment, we’re really delving into Peter’s personal relationship with the Symbiote and how it affects those closest to him…,” Insomniac said.
The scene shifts to Miles as he attempts to reach the Lizard before Kraven’s Hunters. One of the new traversal mechanics that can be deployed by either Spider-Man is the Web Wings. These allow Peter and Miles to move about the city swiftly and urgently. Wind tunnels can be used to keep up the momentum and move with haste throughout the city zipping past all manner of cars, buildings, and people.
Miles makes his way to a Fish Market as he stealths his way past the Hunters. Alongside new combat and traversal abilities, there are new gadgets that can be used as well. The Web Line can be used to cast a line and sneak around the environment. The Web Grabber pulls enemies together to an isolated spot. Some of Miles’ new abilities are shown off during this section of the reveal. The Thunder Burst unleashes an electrifying ground pound against a group of foes. Chain lighting has a shocking radius of effect on any nearby enemies.
Working together, the Spider-Men pursue Lizard and fight the Hunters who seek his capture. Unfortunately for them, Kraven is well-equipped: boats, aerial transports, and weapons are all-eyes on Lizard. The Great Hunt continues along the East River, one of the new areas you can traverse in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and the action is tight: Miles dismantles vehicles in his wake while Peter Parker leads the chase from afar.
You’ll seamlessly switch between both Spider-Men across a variety of story moments in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Insomniac wants players to bask in iconic team-ups elevated by our signature set-piece moments, and experience the story from the perspective of each Spider-Man.
The game is set to release in Fall 2023 for PlayStation 5.
