Matt Nava, the visionary artist behind the games Journey, The Pathless, and ABZÛ, was announced in PlayStation Showcase 2023 that he will be directing the next game from Giant Squid; Sword of the Sea. According to the Giant Squid Discord, Sword of the Sea “shares the same core principles of fluid motion, scintillating music, and innovative design” similar to Journey. Sword of the Sea is a single-player game where players can play as a wraith and are “tasked with restoring life to it as you explore submerged ruins and the vibrant, varied cultures within.” In the player’s quest to restore the ocean to the desolate world, they will be taken through “sinking tombs, mysterious shipwrecks, and petrified battlefields” while also remaining wary of strange leviathans in their way.
Surf across the surreal undulating landscapes of the Necropolis on a quest to unveil a lost ocean teeming with life
The fluid motion of the game places the wraith on the “Hoversword,” acting as a hybrid snow, skate, and hoverboard, to travel across the sands at high speeds to explore through the “skatepark-like ruins, lost in the tides of the Necropolis of the Gods.” Giant Squid Studios is a small developer company based in California founded by Matt Nava.
“We believe that video games are more than a pastime – they are an artistic medium that can deliver beautiful, meaningful, and timeless experiences to a wide range of people. Our goal is to create games that fulfill that potential. We strive to create innovative and deeply moving experiences that will inspire players, challenge convention, and push the boundaries of interactive entertainment to new exciting areas.” Sword of the Sea currently has no current release date but developers have confirmed it will be available on both PlayStation 5 and Steam.
