For those of you who have a sub account on the PlayStation Network, you will be happy to hear that this past week Sony has added the ability to upgrade your profile to a master account once you hit 18 years of age.
Sub-accounts are used for players under the age of 18 whose guardians have more control over what they can do online. Unlike a master account, the functions on sub accounts are limited by how much can be spent in the PlayStation Store, gameplay broadcast, messages, and limited chat abilities. Most accounts are not able to use money for purchases unless linked to a master account and even then the parental functions have the right to override those abilities. Beforehand players who wanted to upgrade would have to completely start a new profile on a master account losing all prior progress from their previous account.
If you were on a sub account and turned 18 (Happy belated birthday!), you may want to upgrade to a master account to access the full feature set of PlayStation’s online experience, including PlayStation Store. Your profile will be carried over when upgrading to a master account, along with items like your friends list and Trophies.
In order to upgrade your account, you must log on to the Sony Entertainment Network, then you will be prompted by a message if you’re eligible for an upgrade, click on “Upgrade Account”, accept the terms of service policy, and now you have successfully upgraded your to a master account. As stated on the PlayStation Blog, they hope to have the upgrade function available on PlayStation 4’s in the near future.
