Earlier this week, PlayStation announced that they had acquired Insomniac Games, the developers behind Marvel’s Spider-Man, the fastest-selling exclusive in PlayStation’s history. With Insomniac Games, PlayStation now has 14 first-party studios working on games for the PlayStation platform. As part of that announcement, Shawn Layden, the Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios also mentioned that while the focus will always be on the PlayStation platform, they are looking to distribute certain PlayStation titles to different platforms, mainly PC.
In an interview, Shawn Layden said: “We must support the PlayStation platform — that is non-negotiable. That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider install base.” The other titles that Layden is referring to are “multiplayer titles designed to be played on personal computers.” SIE is already set to publish ReadySet Heroes on PC via the Epic Games Store. The game is fast paced multiplayer dungeon crawler meets arena brawl. PC is known to have the widest installed base in gaming, even though console gaming has only gotten more popular this generation. The proof of that is with the 100 million units of the PlayStation 4 that have been sold.
According to a recent rumor, Sony is preparing to go all out the rest of the year with major marketing pushes for two of the most highly anticipated games, Death Stranding and The Last of Us: Part II. In addition to the marketing push, PlayStation is supposedly planning two big events leading up to the launch of the next generation as well. The first of these rumored events is a November State of Play which will allegedly reveal a release date for The Last of Us: Part II. Then, in February, PlayStation is allegedly set to hold a PlayStation Meeting where they will finally announce the PlayStation 5. Whatever the case, it looks like PlayStation may start selling to multiple platforms in the future.
