PlayStation Announces “Deep Dive” Into PS5’s System Architecture With Lead System Architect Mark Cerny Tomorrow, March 18

After a month of radio silence following their withdrawal from PAX East and GDC, PlayStation has announced a “deep dive” tomorrow, March 18 with Mark Cerny, the Lead Architect of PlayStation 5. This will be the first time that PlayStation 5 will be talked about since the publication of several articles teasing what new features will be available with PlayStation 5. Since then, Microsoft has taken the time to discuss the next-generation of consoles with Xbox Series X. PlayStation tweeted out that this will happen on the PlayStation Blog at 9 am PST.

Even though this will be the first time that Sony will be breaking down what is going into their next-gen console, many already have an idea for what to expect thanks to several patents that have been filed. The patents range from revealing the Dualshock 5, the possibility of backwards compatibility for all generations of PlayStation, and the removal of loading screens. In comparison, PlayStation and Xbox share a similar philosophy for what the next-generation of consoles will look like.

Recently, Microsoft and Xbox revealed the full specs for Xbox Series X and broke down how the technology of the console will change how game developers create their games. Xbox Series X will focus on three things, power, speed, and compatibility. Their goal is to aim for an experience that has never been seen before on a console which is support for up to 120 FPS. With Xbox Series X, Microsoft wants gamers to spend more time playing and less time waiting. Finally, Microsoft will continue their commitment to backwards compatibility and has created new features that ensure that you will get the best experience possible no matter what Xbox console you own.

On the other side, while not much has been said about PlayStation 5, Sony has discussed how they want players to become more immersed in gaming with the new features coming to the controller. This includes things that haptic feedback and adaptive triggers to make it so developers can offer different levels of resistance. In other words, shooting a weapon like a bow will feel different from shooting a gun. Recently, Herman Hulst, the new Head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios said that they are “very committed to quality exclusives and to strong narrative-driven, single-player games” which have been very successful for PlayStation.

We will learn more about how Sony and PlayStation 5 will shape the next-generation very soon with what seems like the reveal of PlayStation 5 which is very similar to how Sony revealed PlayStation 4. Hopefully, things continue to go as planned and the launch of the next-generation won’t be delayed as analysts have predicted.
