PlayStation Accounts for 78 Percent of Sony’s Profits

Financial reports and other business-related fine details are considered the dull side of video games – but they can hide some pretty interesting news.

Sony Corporation released its financial results spanning from April 1 to June 30 – the Game & Network Services division, which covers PlayStation, turned out to be the company’s strongest, with increases in both sales and profit. With sales of $3.2 billion and an operating income of $427 million, the G&NS division was responsible for 78% of Sony’s overall $546 million profit.

That’s a lot of numbers, and here’s some more – 3.5 million PlayStation 4 units were sold in that three month period, bringing total sales of the PS4 to 43.5 million units. Eventually, the PS4 is expected to sell more than 100 million units worldwide before its lifecycle ends – a goal only reached by five other consoles: the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Game Boy, Nintendo DS, and the Wii.

Even though Sony Corporation’s sales and profits are down compared to last year, the gaming division is its healthiest, and will hopefully maintain this strength in the years to come.
