PlayStation 5 & Project Scarlett May Focus On Streaming

After leaking images of a PlayStation 5 development kit, the same tipster is now providing more information on how the next generation of consoles will look to make live streaming a big component because both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett will supposedly ship with a camera.

This information comes from an anonymous developer who is working with a studio who has access to both dev kits of the PlayStation 5, codenamed Prospero and the Xbox Scarlett. The developer said that while both are focusing on streaming, Microsoft is making the camera a huge priority while the Prospero dev kit is using older camera technology. Microsoft’s camera will be capable of 4k resolution with a two-frame latency between what is recorded and what appears on stream. According to the developer, Microsoft has shown off the capabilities of the camera using a Snapchat-like demo that changes with the in-game lighting. A Microsoft spokesman denied any camera technology is in development and that none has been delivered to developers in any form.

According to the developer, Xbox Scarlett and the PlayStation 5 will have the “greatest compute jump in any console.” Both consoles are also going to prioritize power, using it more efficiently than previous generations. Recently both Xbox and PlayStation said that they plan for both of their consoles to save more energy than before. There has also been more information about the PlayStation 5 as several patents have revealed what the console may be able to do. One patent had to do with backwards compatibility while another was all about getting rid of loading screens. Phil Spencer also provided some details on what he wants Xbox Scarlett to be. In an interview, Spencer said that improved playability, higher frame rates and lower loading times are the focus of Xbox Scarlett. It also looks like cross-play may be available for the PlayStation 5 as it had recently been announced out of beta and available for all developers to use their cross-play features.

As of now, the PlayStation 5 has not been officially revealed but Project Scarlett will release Holiday 2020 alongside Halo: Infinite.
