PlayStation 5 Plans to Save More Energy Compared to PS4

In our world today, making changes to create a better future for our planet is vital. Many are finding alternatives to use less energy or lower the amounts of CO2 emissions to slow down the rate of global warming. Native Americans still today practice taking from the Earth only what is needed, then giving it back when the time is right. Thankfully, we are seeing big companies like Sony doing their part, introducing new details that the new PS5 will be more energy sufficient compared to the PS4 making our planet a little greener and happier.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment boss Jim Ryan gave a lot of information on how we can expect the PS5 to save energy compared to its counterpart. For starters, even the PS4 was made in such a way to conserve energy with Jim Ryan stating, “For context, we estimate the carbon emissions we have avoided to date already amount to almost 16m metric tons, increasing to 29m metric tons over the course of the next 10 years (which equals the CO2 emissions for the nation of Denmark in 2017).” Now, we can expect the PS5 to take even more steps to go green.

It seems that both consoles saving grace has been the suspension feature. PS4 can enter a suspended mode that uses about 10 watts of power. Jim Ryan stated they are looking to further reduce that number considerably. “I am also very pleased to announce the next-generation PlayStation console will include the possibility to suspend gameplay with much lower power consumption than PS4 (which we estimate can be achieved at around 0.5 W),” Ryan states. “If just one million users enable this feature, it would save equivalent to the average electricity use of 1,000 US homes.” This would be a huge reduction in the suspension feature and even if they don’t quite make the 0.5 mark.

It’s great to see big companies like Sony are also concerned for our planet and are doing whatever they can to keep gamers happy and go green as much as they can. It’s our planet after all and it’s important everyone does their part to give back to it in any way they can.

Nathan Arquiette: Mom and Dad would never buy me a gaming console growing up, so I bought my own Dreamcast when I was 10 years old. Ever since then my passion for gaming went wild. Why watch a movie or read a book when you can take part in the plot playing a game was my philosophy. "Video games rot your brain" but I had a 10th grade reading level in the 6th grade all thanks to RPG's. Talking and writing about games is something I will never get tired of.
