PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, the newest “battle royale” style game, has quickly become one of the most popular online multiplayer games over the past couple of months. Having started out as simply a series of ARMA 2 mods, the game quickly picked up steam on Twitch, and led to its rising popularity. After experiencing the thrilling gameplay of Battlegrounds, some fans have wondered what director Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene has planned for the future.
According to an article from PCGamesN, Greene announced in a recent interview that, having seemingly conquered the battle royale genre, he plans to make a survival game next:
I’ve wanted to make a survival game. I mean, I love DayZ and I love DayZ standalone, but I have my own idea for a survival game, and I just want to make a game I want to play.
That being said, Battlegrounds is still in Early Access, so any future games from PlayerUnknown are still far off. Once he does start work on his eventual next project, though, don’t expect him to forget about all the PUBG gamers. He has said that he and his development partners, Bluehole, plan to support the online battle royale for many years:
We’re not making a game, we’re creating this as a service, so this is something we hope to improve upon and keep building upon over the next five, ten years.
Greene stated that they plan to continue working on the game even after its been launched, doing whatever they can to make the game “better and more polished.”
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is currently available on Steam as an Early Access title. An Xbox One version will be out later this year, with a PlayStation 4 version coming out at some later date.
