Publisher Playdigious and developer Ritual Studios have released a brand new release date trailer and gameplay dive into their pixel turn-based role-playing game Fretless. Gematsu reports that the title will launch on PC on July 17
Fretless is set in a pixel-art fantasy world infused with music, where each of its elements contributes to a a unique melody; The world’s harmony has been disrupted by villain Rick Riffson who’s set on stealing musicians’ musical essence through soul-binding contracts. Players will assume the the role of a friendly musician named Rob who is set on a quest to restore harmony to the world.
Studderstruck conducted an interview with Ritual Studios developer Rob Scallon and he had this to say about Fretless’s start “It started with just a a little tiny, video idea, I’m a YouTuber, I’m a musician and I did a few videos that were like choose your own adventure and I did one that was a guitar battle and I had this idea that I pitched to my friend Jeff who happens to be a game developer. What if we direct people to a little flash game? Jeff was like “Okay I’ll start making a little musical RPG this is cool.” Once we started exploring that idea it was like “Oh we want to do more with this.” Just as we continued to explore what a musical RPG is, the QTE and rhythm based parts just made a lot of sense and so that actually came in pretty late and that that video idea was about 8 years ago I mean the domino effect of development…”
Ritual Studios aims for Fretless to be a unique, music centered RPG experience. Players will be able to engage in turn-based combat while collecting and dishing out musical abilities in “riffing” and play with rhythm based timing for “crescendo attacks.” These unique offerings may entice fans of role playing games when Fretless releases come July.
