Developer Obsidian has revealed more information on the first of its Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire DLCs. The game, which released back in May, has been getting a good release amount of smaller, free pieces of content since launch; now, it’s about to get larger chunks of story-oriented content. After announcing Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire‘s three main expansions before the game launched, Obsidian has now announced that The Beast of Winter DLC is going to release in August.
This DLC will put players in an interesting position: regardless of the Watcher’s morality in-game, they bring plenty of chaos and destruction to the world of Deadfire. In The Beast of Winter, the Watcher is lauded for that destruction, rather than heroism. The DLC’s official synopsis reads:
Far in the southernmost reaches of the Deadfire Archipelago, frost and death have encroached upon the land of the living. You, Watcher, have received a missive from the isle’s residents: worshipers of Rymrgand, the god of entropy and disaster. They call you Duskspeaker, a harbinger of the end, and pray you fulfill your destiny.
The Beast of Winter promises to take players “to Hel itself,” which essentially means you’ll be traversing the realms of the dead. The DLC will also allow players to “join forces with Vatnir, an Endings Godlike and Priest of Rymrgand, to bring battle to the monstrosities that roam the Beyond.” And, in true Pillars of Eternity style, players will get the chance for a presumably epic dragon fight as they “confront an ancient dragon, whom even the gods fear, before she brings Eora to an icy end.”
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is available now for PC, Mac, and Linux, and it’ll be out later this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the Switch. The Beast of Winter will release on August 2.
