The monumental fourth-wall breaking military shooter Spec Ops: The Line is currently free for a limited time on the Humble Store. With only a day left to pick it up as of this writing, it’s certainly in your best interest to try it out as soon as you can.
Spec Ops: The Line has gone down as one of the most cerebral modern military shooters of recent memory. Without spoiling too much, it’s safe to say this game has the reputation of defying player expectations. Though on the surface it projects the tale of a conventional military adventure, the game quickly reveals that it’s approaching war from a perspective games often critically miss. With the hopes of dehumanizing war and taking accountability for mass atrocities, Spec Ops: The Line will certainly have you questioning every motive or decision along the way.
The narrative remains steadily uncertain throughout, and carries a mature, introspective approach that urges players to explore the glamorization of war. It’s proven early on that players must traverse a bleak desert lacking any benevolent outcomes, and perpetuating decisions that constitute amorality. The gameplay offers an incredible amount of momentum, with enemy infiltrations’ being around various corners, and the setting within Dubai being both sprawling and barren. Sandstorms are not uncommon, and the vertical gameplay offered helps offset the constant disorientation. Players explore the area with a small Delta-Force squad of soldiers who are there to protect and guide them. Multiplayer campaigns are also available, and expand upon the singleplayer experience with more customization options and class-based objectives.
It would be a shame to miss out on this game while it’s free. Currently, it’s available across all platforms, so whether you’re sporting Windows, Mac, or Linux, Spec Ops: The Line is waiting for you.
