Phoenix Online Publishing Releases ‘Heroes & Legends: Conquerors of Kolhar’

Indie publisher Phoenix Online has put out their latest title, an RPG called Heroes & Legends: Conquerors of Kolhar, on Steam.

The game is essentially a 2D fantasy game with RPG and strategy elements fused together. The story is nothing particularly special; you must lead your party of wizards, warriors and the like into a number of battles in a quest to “save the kingdom of Kolhar, along the way encountering hordes of enemies and finding new allies.”

H&L’s turn-based gameplay is a bit…different from other RPGs. Players have three party members at all times: a mage, a fighter and a cleric. Two additional party members, Jomon, a giant lizard who can snipe enemies and heal party members, and Tysha, a seductress of some sort, can be met later in the game that can be swapped between the existing three.

During combat, players do not directly control their party members; instead, characters attack automatically with whatever weapons and spells they have equipped, with different items having varying cooldown lengths between attacks.

Instead, player input lies entirely in managing character inventory such as weapons and armor, swapping in different weapons and skills during combat and making sure the party is regularly healed, all of this in real time. In between battles, players can craft gear for their party and level up characters.

There are over a hundred different enemies for players to murder, and Phoenix also has a printable Bestiary and collectible cards available on their website.

In a preview by MMORPG.com, it was noted that H&L, with its somewhat detached gameplay, seemed more like a free to play game for tablets and mobile phones. This is, of course, not the case, as the game is selling on Steam for $9.99. You can watch their gameplay video below and make your own judgement.

Heroes & Legends: Conquerors of Kolhar is developed by French studio Cuve Games, an indie team whose credits include Questrun and Skies.
