Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Player Base Exceeds 9 Million Worldwide

Sega Sammy, which is the official parent company of all Sega brandings, has released their quarterly financial report. The report shows a significant improvement on a year-to-year comparison of the previous fiscal year, and it has a lot to do with a newer IP that launched the month the quarter ended. Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, which is a update/spin off of the original Phantasy Star Online 2 released on June 9, 2021, and was apparently more than enough to entice players, new and old, to try out some of the new features and mechanics. Sega Sammy states in their report that Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis has surpasses more than 9 million players word wide, an insane achievement for a game that’s been out for under a month.

The company also mentioned that the total sales number for Phantasy Star Online 2 has achieved 100 billion Yen, or $913 million. These numbers include the total amount of dollars collected since the original title launched exclusively in Japan all the way back in 2012. Sega Sammy also reports that 6.5 million of the 9 million players in Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis are in Japan, and account for more than half the total player base. Thanks to this huge boost, the company states that the overall sales for the quarter were 59 billion Yen, or $539 million.

As we already mentioned, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is an update to the MMORPG, as well as acting as a separate title altogether. The original game eventually made its way to other regions after many years of waiting, but the addition of a new and improved title was quite the surprise when Sega unveiled it last year. Regardless, the title has been doing well enough for the company to have a positive outlook for future financial reports.
