Persona 5: The Royal Announced for PS4

After teasing something called Person 5 R last December, Atlus finally revealed to fans what it is. After the airing of the special episode, “Stars and Ours,” of Persona 5: The Animation this past weekend in Japan, Atlus aired a new teaser for the new title along with giving it the official title of Persona 5: The Royal.

The short teaser opens on a rainy day in the Shibuya district, one of the original game’s main hub areas, before focusing on a new female character. As translated by Gematsu, someone asks this new character her opinion on the Phantom Thieves to which she responds with, “I think helping people is a wonderful thing, but if I had to say, I don’t like them. I don’t think the Phantom Thieves’ methods will make the world a better place or help anyone. In the end, I feel like you can only solve that yourself.”

It is currently unknown if the new character will be a new confidant, antagonist, or even playable character, but it appears she will be involved in the story heavily. However, based on the teaser, if she is a playable character, she won’t just be a gender swap of the protagonist similar to the female protagonist in Persona 3 Portable.

While the teaser was short, it ended with Atlus stating more information on the title will come on April 24 at the Persona Super Live concert. According to the official website, Persona 5: The Royal is set to release only on PlayStation 4 at the moment. This is unlike the original Persona 5 which came to PlayStation 3 alongside PlayStation 4 upon release.

It comes as no surprise Atlus would want to do more with Persona 5. The company is known for releasing versions of the games with extra content, and releasing plenty of spinoff games based on the main series. Persona 5 already had Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, a rhythm game spinoff, that released last year. Atlus also registered plethora of domain names late last year that were all tied into Persona 5.

Along with this, the game’s main character, Joker, will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the game’s first DLC character. The cast of Persona 5 will also appear in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth which is set to release in North America this June.
