A game over ten years old will seldom receive an update. By this time, developers will have their focus on another project and most gamers will have moved on from the game. However, with larger titles, this varies. Small updates may be made to improve bugs that diehard fans find, but nothing that is enough to note.
Starbreeze Entertainment has done the opposite of this, making an update to their most successful release PAYDAY 2. Originally released in 2013, fans have been enjoying this game for thirteen years, not leaving it even with the follow-up release of PAYDAY 3 in 2023.
With 65+ DLCs, it comes to no surprise that the size of it would be an issue to those who own even half of the downloadable content. This has long been a complaint in the community, as the file size is 86 GB. Another comment that is commonly made is how the game should be ported to 64-bit.
Luckily, for PAYDAY 2 fans, their suggestions have been listened to by the developers of the game. In an announcement made on June 26th, it was said that not only would the game be ported to 64-bit, but the file size has been reduced to 32 GB. Along with this, there is an upgrade from DX9 to DX11 rendering, load times have been sped up on SSDs, and six character lobby codes were added. PAYDAY 2’s engine upgrade, called Diesel 3.0, has been called “a massive rewrite of the entire codebase”. This upgrade changes the way players will experience the game positively, fixing issues like “out of memory” crashes and helping the game run smoother on lower end hardware.
The update will be available to gamers to test out and send their feedback during its open beta period available on June 30th on Steam.
