Owlcat Games, best known for their work on CRPGs such as Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righetous, as well as the ever popular Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, have recently been branching out from merely creating games to publishing them. As revealed earlier in the month, Owlcat Games is publishing Rue Valley by Emotion Spark Studios, and now they’ve announced Shadow of the Road by Another Angle, a game set in feudal Japan.
Shadow of the Road is a game developed by Another Angle, published by Owlcat Games. Shadow of the Road is an atmospheric gaming experience that artfully blends elements of cRPG and turn-based combat, allowing players to freely explore the rich tapestry of alternative 19th-century Japan. Immerse yourself in a world that combines tradition and modernity, Japanese mythology and steampunk technology. Enter the struggle between the Shogun and the Emperor, and delve into the captivating narratives, leading a diverse group of adventurers through a dynamic world where your decisions shape the destiny of this enchanting realm.
As shown in the trailer, this definitely isn’t the traditional 19th century Japanese setting, as the giant mechanical spiders and yokai demons can attest to, but as interesting as the setting looks the true star of the trailer is undoubtedly the gameplay. Looking like a mix of the traditional top-down RPGs that Owlcat is known for as well as a turn-based environment-matters system vaguely reminiscent of XCOM or even Front Mission this game looks to be ambitious both in setting and in gameplay.
And don’t worry, if you’re concerned about how gritty a game set in a stylized version of the Edo period, a time where Japan really began to step onto the world stage with resistance both within and outside of it, is going to be the trailer went out of its way to feature a decapitation, so there’s that.
Be on the lookout for Shadow of the Road, RPG lovers. You’ll definitely not to miss this unique experience. Shadow of the Road is available for wishlisting on Steam.
