The 2016 Golden Joystick Awards came to a close earlier today in London’s The O2 Arena, with Dark Souls 3 receiving the most coveted prize: Ultimate Game of the Year.
According to PCgamer, Overwatch came into the event with the most nominations, having been nominated for nine categories. And the game did not disappoint. Blizzard’s Overwatch took home five of the nine categories it was nominated for, including Best Original Game, Best Multiplayer Game, Competitive Game of the Year, Best Gaming Moment, and PC Game of the Year.
Last year’s Ultimate Game of the Year, The Witch 3: Wild Hunt, raked up on even more awards, having won three more for its expansion pack, Blood and Wine, including Best Storytelling, Best Visual Design, and Best Gaming Performance. However, perhaps the biggest accomplishment for the game might be its studio, CD Projekt Red, taking home the Studio of the Year award. Last year’s Fallout 4 received an award for Best Audio, and this year’s under-the-radar indie game, Firewatch, was awarded for the best Indie game. Perhaps the most obvious game to take home an award this year was Niantic’s Pokémon Go. The game was awarded with Best Handheld/Mobile Game as well as Best Innovation of the year.
The 34th annual event marked the first time in its history that voting was open to the public, which were able to vote on 21 of the 25 gaming awards. Below is the full list of the 2016 Golden Joystick Awards:
