Overwatch Developers Reveal Why Terry Crews Isn’t The Voice Actor For Doomfist

There were a few developers at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con but one of the most prevalent of them was Blizzard Entertainment. They had a load new merchandise on display, and Hearthstone, their popular online collectable card game hosted an ice cream social in which they featured guest visits from the Lich King and Jessica Nigiri. However, it was Overwatch and it’s new character Doomfist that seemed to steal the show. Blizzard had recently released the new character on PC and also sponsored a pretty elaborate cosplay for the panel that they hosted which was solely about how the concept for the character was created.

During this panel many fans had the same question on their mind; Why isn’t Terry Crews the voice actor for Doomfist? Crews spoke about visiting Blizzard and even released an audition tape for the role, but the part ended up going to Sahr Ngaujah. The question about Crews being the character’s voice actor didn’t come up during the panel but fans were heard shouting out the actor’s name throughout the Q and A section.

Blizzard senior designer Michael Chu explained in a follow up, “We love Terry. Terry’s awesome. He came and visited us. We had a great time. But when we were looking for Doomfist, we were looking for something very specific given his role in the game and everything. When we were early in the audition process, we heard Sahr, who’s the actor who plays Doomfist, and he just blew us away immediately. Once we heard his voice, it was like, ‘Holy crap. That’s Doomfist.”

They also commented on the different “flavors” that Sahr was able to bring to the character and thus this helped them make their decision. Even though Crews didn’t exactly fit what the developers were looking for this does not rule out the possibility of him taking up another role in the future. Doomfist will be available for the full game on July 27.
