Starbreeze Studios has announced that the console release of Overkill’s The Walking Dead has been delayed indefinitely from its initial February 6, 2019 release date. The company did state that more information for the game’s new release date will come at some point in the future. The console version of Overkill’s The Walking Dead was set to be worked on by English studio d3t and published by 505 Games for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The announcement from Starbeeze Studios concerning the delay of Overkill’s The Walking Dead reads as follows:
Starbreeze has decided to postpone the release date from its original February 2019 date, further information regarding the future release will be announced at a later date.
After announcing the game back in August 2014, Starbreeze Studios had high hopes for a game set in the massively popular The Walking Dead series. After four years of development, Overkill’s The Walking Dead originally released on PC late last year on November 6. However, upon release, the game suffered from mixed to poor critical reception, currently sitting at a 52 on Metacritic, due to price point and lack of technical polish, among other things. This in turn led to very poor sales of the game in response.
All in all, this news of the delay comes at a tumultuous time for Starbreeze Studios. The company filed for reconstruction with the company’s CEO Bo Andersson stepping down after poor sales of the PC release of Overkill’s The Walking Dead. Days later, Swedish authorities raided Starbreeze Studios due to suspicion of insider trading. After reconsidering costs, the studio also isn’t set to recognize the $10 million license fee from 505 Games for the console version of Overkill’s The Walking Dead as revenue until the end of the current financial quarter. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Starbreeze Studios, and when or if Overkill’s The Walking Dead will see a release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
