Outlast Released on Xbox One

Arguably one of the finest survival horror releases of 2013, Outlast has now made its way to the Xbox One and is currently available for $19.99 at the Xbox Games Store, along with its recently released DLC prequel, Whistleblower, which is going for $8.99.

Outlast was released for the PC last September, and for the PlayStation 4 last February. Whistleblower was released for both those systems on May 6 in North American and May 7 in Europe.

Taking place in a mental asylum in Colorado, Outlast thrusts the player in the shoes of investigative reporter Miles Upshur, who is tipped off by a whistleblower of the atrocities going on at Mount Massive Asylum. Miles heads to the asylum in hopes of scoring a jackpot of a story, and as you might imagine, this turns out to be a horrible, horrible mistake.

Throughout Outlast, the player is armed with only a video camera that can be used to get a closer look at things thanks to its zoom lens, as well as to see in the dark because of its night vision functionality. Other than that, the player has but his wits and his legs to evade the asylum’s deranged and disfigured inhabitants. The player can leap over obstacles in parkour-like fashion and hide under beds or in lockers to evade a painful death.

In the Whistleblower DLC, players take on the role of Waylon Park, the man who alerted Miles Upshur in the first place.

Outlast was developed by Red Barrels, which is based out in Montreal. Their website describes them as specializing in “single player downloadable games” in which “the player goes on an emotional and unforgettable journey.”
