At PAX East, Red Barrels released some gameplay for their upcoming game, Outlast 2. Right from the beginning the gameplay of Outlast 2 looks beautiful! The graphics are amazing just like in its predecessor. With this much attention to detail, this helps make the gamer feel like he or she is actually in the environment and puts you into the shoes of the main character rather than just a person aimlessly pushing buttons on a couch.
In Outlast the player was stuck in the one asylum, but in Outlast 2 there are many different locations that you will be able to discover, such as a small village, an abandoned school, some cornfields, and many more. Each of these locations were horrifying bringing out a creepy atmosphere at every new area. Whether it is from seeing or hearing strange things that actually aren’t there, the creaking of the wood floors from under you, or your constant loud steps and breathing as you try to quietly walk around the place.
From the gameplay you can tell a lot of the things from the first game have found their way back into the sequel. Such as the great attention to detail of the environment, bodies, and corn fields. There are also the key things like hiding from the people chasing you in barrels, diving into water, night vision camera, stealthy avoiding killers, and of course running. The lighting of the game is also very dark so keeping track of your batteries will be very important because you would constantly need to use them.
Outlast set the bar pretty high for any new Survival Horror games to come, but from the gameplay it seems that Outlast 2 will be able to fill those large shoes and maybe even raise the already high bar.
