When it comes to the rarest Pokémon in Pokémon Go, you only have to look so far to know that Articuno is one of them. Ever since the heyday of the first generation of Pokémon in 1997, players were searching on their Game Boys for the ice/flying legendary and now it looks like Articuno has made its entrance in Pokémon Go. Not in icy places like Antartica, Greenland or Russia, but Ohio. There’s a video on the Dayton Pokémon Go Facebook page of a woman who has taken over a gym for Team Mystic with her Articuno.
Kaitlyn Covey, owner of the Articuno in question says that it was gifted to her by Niantic. However, even with the video showing her protecting her gym with Articuno and her word about it, there is still a possibility that it is a hoax. Covey could be using a hack that allows you to change the appearance of your Pokémon.
Ever since the video evidence of the Articuno in Covey’s possession, traffic to the Facebook page has exploded, causing the page to change its name from “Dayton Ohio Pokémon Go!” to “Was: Dayton Ohio Pokémon Go! Now: Articuno Freakshow,” according to Kotaku.
Prior to the supposed capture of Articuno, it was reported that Mew, Mewtwo, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres and Ditto were yet to be captured, also from an article from Kotaku.
Kaitlyn Covey and her husband live streamed the video and the email that said Niantic supposedly sent Covey, but worth noting is the misspelling of the word Articuno.
In response to the story Geek.com reached out to Niantic about the supposed capture of Articuno:
The spokesman said, after checking on the issue, that the Articuno “was not from Niantic. it’s either a spoof or someone hacked the game,” but added that the company is still “looking into it” and there aren’t “clear answers at the moment.”
Despite the evidence that the Coveys are showing us, the fact that Niantic has denied it puts the Articuno capture into question. Hopefully it will all be settled soon and we can get a definitive answer if the Articuno capture is legitimate or not.
