If you love tech or have glanced at twitter lately it’s unlikely that you haven’t heard about Samsung’s Note 7 explosion problem. If you don’t know here’s the short version: they do. According to BER, theories as to why the phone is spontaneously combusting range from manufacturing issues, to problem with the fast-charging, and the phone’s design. Whatever the reason is Oculus has decided that it was too much of a risk, even with Samsung stopping production and recalling the phones.
As of today, Oculus has pulled Note 7 support for the Gear VR. Polygon reports that the announcement was made via emails and an update on the Oculus website. In the post, it says that safety is Oculus’s number one concern and because of that they have decided to no longer support the Note 7.
This post has been edited to delete reference to the Galaxy Note7. Customer safety is our top priority. While Samsung investigates multiple reports of issues on the Samsung Galaxy Note7, Oculus is removing support for all Note7 devices on the Oculus platform.
For people who have bought content on the Oculus store to use with their Note7, they have the option to be refunded for that content. More information about the refund process is forthcoming, and if you have any immediate questions, please go here. Please visit Samsung’s information page or contact Samsung directly.
Anyone that purchased any software, including games and the like, on the Note 7 for the Gear VR will be able to get a full refund. Although there is no word on how to do so at the time of writing. The Oculus FAQ says that more info is coming.
The device still supports the S7, S7 Edge, Note 5, S6 Edge Plus, S6, and S6 Edge.
