Obsidian’s RPG Tyranny Details Revealed

Creators of several high profile role-playing games such as Fallout: New Vegas, Knights of the Old Republic 2, and Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment’s new game Tyranny is set to release this year. It will be a brand new property, and is heavily inspired by classic RPGs of the past such as Baldur’s Gate. Obsidian has released forty minutes of the game played by the developers in this YouTube video:

Recently, details of the game have been revealed that showcase some of the mechanics of the game. Unlike in most role-playing games where you are given the choice of various spells and forced to make something out of them, Tyranny will feature a robust spell creation system that will give players total control of their magic prowess.

It works like this: Players must choose their “Core element”, which could be lightning, fire, ice, and more unrevealed options. Then, you begin to modify the spell to fire off as a cone, or a long range beam of energy. Afterwards, you can buff specific attributes about the spell, which could “increase damage, add additional range, [or] buff stun times.” The lore cost (what you use to cast the spell) will fluctuate depending on how much you decide to load onto the spell.

Personal choice appears to be at the forefront of Tyranny’s design philosophy. Want your mage on the front line, dropping wide arcs of lightning that stuns your enemies? You got it. Prefer them to hang in the rear, lobbing gobs of fire on your foes? Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Tyranny is set to release for Windows, Mac, and Linux sometime this year, and MXDWN will provide more coverage as additional details about the game are revealed,
