Nintendo has recently shared tips for the upcoming tactical strategy role-playing game developed by Square Enix called Triangle Strategy, which releases on March 4th this year.
Playable on the Nintendo Switch, Triangle Strategy is a 2D-HD style game where players will engage in strategic combat, recruit allies, and make decisions that influence the course of the story’s progress. This turn-based RPG was announced under the working title Project Triangle Strategy during Nintendo Direct February 2021 with a demo that was accessible for download almost exactly a year later. This demo includes 3 chapters with the availability to transfer this progress to the full version if purchased. In preparation for this, Nintendo released an official blogpost to prepare players for combat.
Once the battle is initiated, the bottom of the screen shows when characters and enemies get to act. Each unit has two actions per turn and can move, attack or use an ability when ready. The battlefield is arranged in a grid format. Characters will only be able to move on a certain number of squares during their turn, and the colors of these squares determine what actions may be taken on them. Blue tiles are safe zones, red lines show which enemy can attack you, and purple spaces warn of a potential enemy attack.
Players will be able to take control of protagonist Serenoa, a young Lord of House Wolffort who resides in Glenbrook. Since taking the title of Lord, he goes on a journey to foster relations with and learn about the reigning powers of the divided nation Norzelia. Beside Serenoa, there are 8 more playable starting characters who can be recruited based on the choices that are made. This journey will take Serenoa through a tense political war and determine the best course of action in order to ensure lasting peace. This splits the main story into different sections: cutscenes, exploration and battles.
Once your unit is in position, red spaces show where they can attack. Hover over potential targets in your line of sight to check out a target’s level, health and how likely the attack or follow-up attack is able to land. Each unit has its own distinct abilities besides regular attacks, such as restoring health or changing the turn order. Some can even use elemental attacks that utilize teamwork, such as lightning attacks electrifying pools of water.
In addition to the grid format of the battlefields, they are multi-tiered. This means finding the best location can turn the tide of battle in your favor. Strategically moving your unit around the battlefield allows for different forms of attack. An example is finding the higher ground or flanking enemies on both sides.
Triangle Strategy’s intricate storyline challenges its players to investigate Norzelia’s political climate in order to make the best choices and negotiations. The prologue demo is available to download before deciding to purchase it in March. If the battles appear too difficult in the demo, the full game allows for adjustable difficulty options.
