With the most recent fiscal quarter for Nintendo coming to a close at the end of March, the company has announced that the Nintendo Switch has passed a new milestone. The insanely successful hybrid console is approaching 35 million units sold, and had reached 34.74 million units sold as of the end of the fiscal quarter. At the end of last year, the console had sold 32.27 million units, so this means the Nintendo Switch sold 2.47 million units over the course of the first three months of 2019.
This new milestone now puts the Nintendo Switch ahead of the Nintendo 64 which sits at 32.97 million units sold over its lifetime. The next Nintendo console on the list to pass is the Super Nintendo Entertainment System at 49.1 million units sold. With the company forecasting 18 million sales for this fiscal year, the console would surpass Nintendo’s second home console easily if that holds true. The hybrid console also appears to be nearing the lifetime sales of the Xbox One.
On the software side of things, the same titles as last time are still the best selling games on the system. There has been no change in ranking either. Still in first is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at 16.69 million units sold. Sitting at second is Super Mario Odyssey with 14.44 million units sold. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has had an insanely strong first few months on sale with 13.81 million units sold. Fourth sits The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with 12.77 million units sold. Finally, the Pokemon: Let’s Go duo sit at 10.63 million units sold combined.
The Nintendo Switch has found astonishing success in just over two years since it was released. The hybrid console was the best selling console of 2018 in the United States, and has continued that trend over the course of the first 3 months of 2019. Nintendo also recently partnered with Tencent and gained approval to sell the console in China. Thus, the Switch could continue its sales dominance. There are also reports that Nintendo is planning to release two new models of the hybrid console. Reports suggested that the company was planning to announce them at E3 with releasing cheaper model this June. However, the company has since denied those reports.
