Nintendo has launched the Switch 2, and it’s already breaking records. Four days following the release, the system has sold over 3.5 million units worldwide, making it the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history. The new hardware offers several upgrades over the original. Switch 2 features a larger screen capable of full 1080p in handheld mode and 4K output when docked. The processor is faster, resulting in better overall performance and sharper visuals. Nintendo has also redesigned the Joy-Con controllers, now magnetic, to come with built-in mouse functionality.
Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, had this to say about the release “Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go.”
Nintendo Switch 2 features GameChat2, which allows player voice and video call while playing, and for players to share their screens mid-session. Nintendo’s aim’s at close the gap between couch co-op and online play. The Switch 2 has also launched alongside Mario Kart World, which features an open world for the first time in the series. Players can drive across cities with up to 24 racers in a single match. Weather effects and new gameplay modes are included in the title. Donkey Kong Bananza is Nintendo’s next new foray into 3D platformers which is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. The title features destructible environments and action combat, set to release July 17.
Nintendo’s direction with the Nintendo Switch 2 has been clear, refining the original Nintendo Switch and upgrading it while allowing players to connect more seamlessly. With its improved visuals, greater performance, and new features in GameChat2 Nintendo aims to bridge the gap between solo play and playing with friends. Reviews are already touting the device as a significant and worthwhile upgrade, we’ll have to see if Nintendo maintains its momentum.
