Nintendo Rolls Out Sweet New Kirby Spin-Off

For those hungry for more Kirby after playing Forgotten Land, Nintendo has announced a new game on Tuesday that might just hit the spot. The company dropped a surprise reveal trailer for Kirby’s Dream Buffet on the morning of July 12, showing off the Pink Puff’s upcoming foray into some tasty-looking obstacle course races.

The trailer opens with Kirby up to his usual antics: getting ready to eat an enormous strawberry cake. Before he can dig in, however, a (magic?) fork shrinks him to roughly the size of a gumball. As Kirby marvels at the now-mountainous cake before him, he is joined by three doppelgängers, and a foot-free footrace to the top of the cake quickly ensues.

HAL Laboratory has a propensity for using the Kirby franchise to test out their more unusual game ideas (which usually involve Kirby becoming a ball), and Dream Buffet appears to be their latest experiment. The game appears to be a three-dimensional take on Kirby Super Star’s Gourmet Race, which pitted Kirby against his nemesis King DeDeDe to see who could eat the most food AND reach the finish line first. This time, however, Kirby will be facing off against eight other competitors for strawberries in a variety of obstacle course challenges (à la Fall Guys).

Curiously, a tweet by Nintendo of America revealed that Dream Buffet will only support maximum of four players, although gameplay footage from the trailer clearly indicates that eight competitors will feature in some challenges; four of the eight slots appear to be reserved for CPU-controlled Waddle Dees.

Hungry for some 4-player Kirby fun? Race through delicious obstacle courses, collect the most strawberries, and thwart your competition using familiar abilities.
