Mario Kart has long been one of the most well-known titles that Nintendo has ever released. The title remained on top of Nintendo’s financial report for the 2021 fiscal year.
Since it was released back in 2017, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been the highest selling game on the Switch. Throughout 2021, the title sold a total of 9.9 million copies to bring its all-time sales up to 45.33 million copies. These high 2021 sales are likely due to the additional content that was added to the game. Multiple DLC courses were added to the game which has helped to draw more players into the game. These DLC options helped contribute to a growing lead over the second-highest selling game on the Switch, Animal Crossing.
Animal Crossing was released in September of 2021 and is a social simulation game that allows players to interact with those around them. Since its release, Animal Crossing has been hit with fans and already sold 38.64 million copies worldwide. Fans should expect the Animal Crossing to continue growing throughout 2022 as the company looks to draw in an even larger fanbase.
Coming in third for Nintendo’s most sold games of all time is Super Smash Bro. Ultimate. The game has sold a total of 28.17 million copies worldwide after its release in 2018. Super Smash Bro. Ultimate is a fighting game that brings together all of the most popular characters from Nintendo games. These fighters face off with their different skill sets as players have full control over how they function.
According to Nintendo’s report, the fourth most sold game is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This game has sold 26.55 million copies and is barely behind Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the third-place ranking. Finally, Pokémon Sword/Pokémon Shield rounds out the top five for Nintendo’s most sold games of all time on the Switch with 24.27 million copies sold.
Nintendo will likely continue their success throughout 2022 as they continue to release new games and even add to their already popular franchises.
